'Grow Your Own' Strawberries

Shop bought strawberry varieties are often chosen for their ability to travel and store well, but home grown strawberries are a huge surprise as to their amazing flavour. The difference is really worth growing your own.

STRAWBERRY, Sarian F1
This strawberry has a particularly long season and has medium to large fruits with a sweet, juicy flavour. Being quite compact they are good for baskets. In good years you can get two crops.

GROW STRAWBERRIES
Preparation
Strawberry plants like full sun and fertile soil.
Sowing
Indoor Sowing: Jan-Apr
Sow seeds on the surface of moist (but not wet) compost, not covering with more compost as the light helps propagation. Propagate till germination at 15-21 C (14-21 days). Pot up as the plants become large enough to handle. When large enough to plant out, harden off for 7-10 days and place 45cm apart (do not plant where potatoes or tomatoes have been grown before).
Growing and Harvesting
Keep well watered at the base of the plant. As fruits begin to develop place straw or a similar material around the plant so that the strawberries do not come into contact with the ground. After harvesting, cut back many of the old leaves, as this will improve the next years crop. It is best to eat strawberries as they are harvested. Removing runners will improve the crop, but if you want to propagate new plants (which is a good idea as plants will tire out), choose a plant just to get runners from and remove all flowers to encourage runner growth. Once the runners have rooted (late summer), dig up and start a new strawberry patch. After three years you should rotate any plants to a different patch.
